adidas has introduced a bold new silhouette called the AdiZero Goukana, blending the brand’s rich performance heritage with the vibrant energy of contemporary street culture.
The new model draws inspiration from the Adios Neftegna, a bright yellow long-distance running shoe steeped in running history. It was worn by Haile Gebrselassie during his world record-breaking run at the 2008 Berlin Marathon, and officially released in 2024 as a lifestyle model in collaboration with Wales Bonner.
The name “Goukana” comes from the Japanese word for “luxurious and plush,” chosen to pay homage to Mr. Toshiaki Omori, the Japanese designer responsible for creating the original adiZero running shoe. The sneaker lives up to its name, featuring premium suede on the uppers and a thick, Lightstrike-cushioned midsole.
The LA-based design team behind the Goukana also drew inspiration from Los Angeles street style, with the shoe’s bulbous heel specifically engineered to complement today’s baggier silhouettes. To celebrate the city’s diverse cultural landscape and dynamic energy, the campaign imagery was created in partnership with three cultural architects who’ve helped shape LA’s vibrant communities:
- Motoring While Black – a creative outlet and community platform for motoring enthusiasts of color founded by Rashod Bacon
- Fabrica de Rosas – a welcoming space for Black and brown cyclists created by Jaime Rosas
- Little Tokyo Table Tennis – a community-based ping pong club known for its inclusive and energetic atmosphere
The adidas AdiZero Goukana drops August 1st on adidas.com and at adidas flagship stores. Check out the shoe and the accompanying campaign imagery below.
