adidas Basketball has never been shy about tinkering with what a hoop shoe can actually be, but the BB.01 pushes that experimentation somewhere entirely new. It’s the debut sneaker from Project: R.A.P. which is short for Radical Athlete Perception, a fresh innovation platform built around additive manufacturing, or in plainer terms, 3D printing footwear pieces specifically tuned to how an athlete moves. Before the official name surfaced, the silhouette was floating around under the placeholder title “adidas Additive.”
Instead of a traditional foam midsole, the BB.01 wraps the foot in a printed lattice structure designed to disappear underfoot. The idea is less about cushioning in the conventional sense and more about connection and minimizing the noise between a player’s foot and the floor, so that cuts, drives, and direction changes feel closer to instinct than to mechanics.
The world’s first 3D printed basketball shoe is set to get its first real test under the bright lights of NBA Summer League, landing on the feet of adidas hooper Mikel Brown Jr. as he makes his pro debut in Las Vegas.
“Just as Summer League introduces the next generation of NBA talent to fans, the Las Vegas event is our way of introducing the future of performance footwear to fans,” says Alexander Taylor, SVP Innovation Design and Concepts, adidas.
adidas is bringing the rollout directly to the city hosting the action. On July 10th, the brand’s Las Vegas flagship will host an activation offering a limited 50 pairs, paired with a behind-the-scenes look at how the shoe actually came together.
An additional 89 pairs will launch via adidas CONFIRMED on July 14th, with another 30 pairs releasing in Greater China, for a total of 169 pairs made available worldwide.
