Jordan Brand's "El Vuelo" Collection Pays Homage to Mexican Wrestling

Ahead of this year’s Mexican Independence Day, Jordan Brand is launching a new collection of Air Jordan sneakers paying homage to lucha libre and Mexico’s rich wrestling tradition. Translating to “The Flight,” the “El Vuelo” collection draws a clear line between Michael Jordan’s aerial prowess and the dramatic high-flying maneuvers of Mexico’s beloved lucha libre wrestlers.

Leading the collection is the Air Jordan 3, built with a smooth white leather base and snakeskin overlays in the colors of the Mexican flag. These jagged panels reflect the intricate design of luchador masks, while the packaging mimics vintage lucha libre posters. Other details include metallic gold Jumpman logos on the tongue, matching gold hardware on the eyelets, gold embroidery on the heels, and a hidden message on the tongues that reads “Más vale maña que fuerza” (“skill is better than strength”), a saying that nods to the strategic thinking often required in the ring.

Joining the AJ3 is an El Vuelo” Jordan Spizike Low with similar design cues, featuring a scaly texture across the entire upper. Its inclusion in this collection feels like a playful nod to the sneakerhead term “Mexican Jordan,” which in some circles can mean a hybrid non-retro model like Spike Lee’s Spizike that may be less coveted than an OG retro.

This release marks Jordan Brand’s second annual Mexico-themed collection for Independence Day. Last year, the brand dropped the AJ5 “El Grito,” named after the rallying cry of Mexican pride heard on the eve of September 16.

The Air Jordan 3 Mexico and Spizike Low “El Vuelo” will first launch in Mexico on September 6th. The AJ3 will be available at select boutiques, while the Spizike Low will drop on Nike.com, select Nike stores, and at select retailers such as Innvictus.

Following the early Mexico launch, a global release for the “El Vuelo” collection is set for September 20th on SNKRS and at select retailers. Check out both pairs and the lucha libre-themed campaign images below.
