Veteran sneakerheads are familiar with the Slam Dunk” Pack that Jordan Brand dropped in 2014. But did you know there was once a Slam Dunk x Air Jordan XX3 in the works?

A sample pair of XX3s from the late ’00s has just been revealed, with special features dedicated to manga artist Takehiko Inoue, creator of the popular ’90s basketball manga series Slam Dunk. Kanji characters that make up the artist’s name (井上雄彦) appear across the uppers, embroidered in various colors against a black backdrop. Multicolored thread is used for MJ’s signature embroidery on the toe cap, as well as to line the side panels. Additional features include a glossy teal midsole and art by Takehiko Inoue on the insoles.

According to sneaker collector Puneet Singh (aka Sole Supreme), this Air Jordan 23 was at one point planned to be released before the project was scrapped:

“In 2008/2009 there was an idea to drop regional AJ23s. This sample here was created for the Asia market. The project was then canceled and these samples got buried for the last 16-17 years.”
