A$AP Rocky and PUMA are bringing a rugged archive silhouette back into the spotlight with the new Straycat, a reworked take on the 2005 Ouninpohja Explorador II that blends trail-inspired construction with Rocky’s longstanding motorsport aesthetic.
As PUMA’s Creative Director, Rocky has regularly dug through the brand’s archive for silhouettes that can be reinterpreted through his own lens. The Ouninpohja Explorador II caught his attention for its aggressive tire-inspired traction and outdoor construction, giving him the foundation for the Straycat.
The original Ouninpohja line drew from rally racing, with its name referencing one of the toughest stages of Finland’s World Rally Championship. The Explorador pushed that inspiration into footwear with a rugged, wraparound sole and tire-like tread. Rocky’s version retains those defining characteristics while updating the construction with a Vibram-enhanced rubber compound, hand-distressed materials, technical detailing, and a unique double-lacing system.
The Straycat also marks Vibram’s first true co-branded outsole, complete with a PUMA Cat logo positioned near the toe. The aggressive tooling is paired with a layered upper and motorsport-inspired details, giving the shoe a distinctly rugged look while shifting the original trail concept toward the street.
“I wanted to rename the shoe Straycat,” says A$AP Rocky. “The name captures the spirit of the outlier, built for rugged terrain racing, now living on the streets. This 2005 icon returns with style and we’ve reengineered it for the future.”
The Straycat continues Rocky’s motorsport-driven approach throughout his PUMA partnership, extending the theme beyond footwear with accompanying apparel and accessories.
