adidas and Staten Island streetwear shop Asphalt NYC are releasing a new Samba together. The two have teamed up for a limited run centered on one of the city’s most recognizable pastries: the cannoli.
Founded in 2018, Asphalt has grown from a New York-based retailer into a seven-location destination for streetwear, designer fashion, and footwear. The shop has built its identity around New York culture, bringing together exclusive releases and collaborations with community-focused events that make its stores feel connected to the city beyond just what’s on the shelves.
“So much of what makes New York special comes from the things we grow up seeing every day,” says Jadah Orilus, Operations Manager and Buyer at Asphalt NYC. “The neighborhood bakery, grabbing a box of pastries for family, knowing exactly which spot has your favorite cannoli or rainbow cookie. We wanted to take something that feels familiar to so many New Yorkers and translate it through an Asphalt lens. The result is playful and nostalgic, but still leaves room for everyone to make it their own.”
The Samba leans into that cannoli reference through color rather than any literal shape. A patent wheat tone covers the toe box and the heel tab, with a gum outsole to match, standing in for the cannoli’s golden shell, while a glossy brown patent leather makes up most of the upper as a nod to the chocolate. The Three Stripes come in a hot pink, borrowed from the pastry counters found in bakeries around the city. A few details include a small gold cannoli charm that hangs from the laces and a sockliner featuring an illustrated print of the pastry itself.
The shoe is also built to be swapped around and modified. adidas and Asphalt included three separate Velcro tongue patches: one in chocolate brown, one in wheat, and one in pink. Each matches a different color found elsewhere on the shoe, with the option to run the sneaker without a tongue patch at all. Three lace options are also included: solid brown, solid pink, and a speckled cream-and-brown colorway, a nod to the sprinkles.
Only 600 pairs are being made, and each one is individually numbered on the tongue lining, running 1 through 600.
