On June 6th, A BATHING APE held its first-ever runway show in China, debuting its Fall/Winter 2024 collection in Shanghai. A plethora of celebrities, influencers, media, and special guests gathered to check out BAPE’s latest pieces, as well as upcoming collections from the brand’s sub-labels: AAPE, BAPE BLACK, BAPY, APEE, and MR. BATHING APE.
The showcase drew inspiration from ancient Chinese traditions, with scenes of a “Siheyuan” (traditional Chinese four-sided courtyard) serving as the show’s opening backdrop. BAPE also incorporated mythical creatures such as the Azure Dragon and the White Tiger, traditional elements such as elegant gardens and palaces, and national motifs such as ink paintings and blue and white porcelain into the set design.
The BAPE FW24 men’s offering featured two central themes: “Subculture Aesthetic” influenced by hip-hop music and “Campus Life” that combines Y2K school life with various college sports elements. Meanwhile, the women’s collection incorporates playful elements like hearts and tulips through themes like “I Love BAPE” and the “Noughties Girls” of the 2000s.
Highlights include a new Marbling Camo print, seen on pieces like the Shark Parka, Snowboard Jacket, and Oversized Garment Dye Sweatpants. BAPE also introduces a Lux Sport pattern, seen on the Puffer Jacket, Tracksuit, and Denim pieces.
The brand also keeps true to its Japanese roots, with graphics inspired by “Wabori” (traditional Japanese tattoos), “Komainu” (Japanese guardian dog statues), and “Botan” (Paeonia flower). Meanwhile, Chinese culture is also well represented, with design elements inspired by dragons, pandas, and the Chinese zodiac.
In addition to the FW24 collection, BAPE will celebrating the 20th anniversary of the iconic Shark Full Zip Hoodie in 2024 with a series of activations and product lineups throughout the season.
