A BATHING APE is throwing it back to the early-2000s NIGO era with the return of four original BAPE STA colorways, releasing in celebration of the silhouette’s 25th anniversary.
The lineup includes the classic Red/Blue/Yellow pair, the Easter-esque “Sax Pink” colorway from 2004 dressed in pastel hues, a Green/Yellow pair, and the “Coffee Brown” colorway with pink side panels.
Seeing these colorways again feels like stepping directly back into the early 2000s, back when hip-hop music videos were the primary stage for sneaker culture, long before social media made sneakers “go viral.” Rappers like Cassidy flexed their BAPE STAs as status symbols, including the Red/Blue/Yellow colorway in “Hotel” and the Sax Pink pair in “Get No Better.”
The BAPE STA is essentially a Nike Air Force 1 knockoff, but it differentiated itself through exaggeration—more shine, more saturation, and more branding—turning a familiar foundation into something that became unmistakably tied to streetwear and hip-hop culture.
