BEAMS is revisiting the Polo Ralph Lauren archive to reintroduce a sought-after fan favorite—the classic Japan Anorak Jacket, also known as the “JAPANORAK”—in celebration of the retailer’s 50th anniversary.
The outerwear grail was first released in 2010 as a Japan-only release and quickly gained cult status. Inspired by Polo’s early ’90s Snow Beach-era styling, the jacket is a vibrant fusion of Tokyo street style and American heritage. Its careful craftsmanship and unique design celebrate urban culture and traditional techniques, making it a versatile staple for style enthusiasts.
What makes this reissue hit even harder is its deep cultural legacy. In the late ’80s and early ’90s, Polo Ralph Lauren became a streetwear obsession thanks to Lo Heads such as Chicago’s Dem Dare crew and the Lo Lifes from Brooklyn, cementing Polo as a key part of hip-hop fashion history. That same Polo-mania eventually extended far beyond the US, with Japan becoming one of the strongest global hubs for Americana-inspired streetwear, and a few names exemplify that influence, such as BEAMS. Founded in Harajuku, Tokyo in 1976, the legendary select shop helped pioneer lifestyle retail in Japan by curating American college and West Coast styles for the Japanese market.
As for the jacket itself, the JAPANORAK stays true to its original appeal, a pullover anorak silhouette with vintage-inspired detailing and that unmistakable “archival grail” energy that fans chase from BEAMS x Polo Ralph Lauren drops. While the materials have been updated to a smoother, more durable fabric, the jacket comes in the same deep navy color and features all the same details as the original. The release also includes collaborative caps in white and navy.
The reissue was first teased by Daku Nishiyama, Ye’s barber in Japan the and designer behind a special white version. Nishiyama has played a key role in restoring attention to the jacket’s legacy.
