Cole Bennett is bringing his visual world to Birkenstock with a new take on the Boston Clog. The filmmaker and founder of Lyrical Lemonade has reworked the 50-year-old silhouette with an off-white wool exterior, a soft microfiber interior, and a custom dark copper buckle inspired by his dog, Moon.
Dubbed the Boston Wooly Moon Buckle, the design covers the familiar Boston shape in wool that Bennett encourages wearers to trim and customize to their liking. The off-white color is intentionally meant to pick up some wear, with Bennett viewing the inevitable dirt and character as part of the shoe’s story.
At the center of the design is the crescent-shaped Moon Buckle, a nod to both imagination and new beginnings and, more literally, Bennett’s dog. “My dog’s name is also Moon. She’s a furry mess,” Bennett says. “So in a way, this shoe is also a love letter to her.”
The collaboration has been more than a decade in the making for Bennett, who says working with Birkenstock has been a personal goal for years. The campaign continues that sense of imagination with a short film built around Bennett, a group of elderly characters, and a yeti carefully trimming bonsai plants. Bennett’s own grandfather also makes an appearance in the campaign imagery.
The campaign’s tagline, “The moon favors a patient hand,” ties back to the meticulous bonsai trimming while reinforcing the Moon Buckle’s themes of patience, imagination, and new beginnings.
“Working with Birkenstock has been a dream of mine for over 10 years. I honestly get starstruck every time we hop on a Zoom meeting,” says Bennett. “Collaborating with this company resembles manifestation and fearless adventure. To represent that in the shoe, I wanted to create something immersive. Something that tells its own story. I encourage every one to trim the wool to their liking, making these shoes their very own.”
