Crenshaw Skate Club has grown immensely since its founding in 2017. Started by Tobey McIntosh at the age of 14, CSC was formed to represent and empower skaters from South LA’s Crenshaw neighborhood. What was once a grassroots, community-driven project has grown into a full-fledged brand, with collaboration with the likes of Jordan Brand, The Hundreds, and Pharrell’s ICECREAM. If you’re still unfamiliar with CSC, this next project with Nike SB will surely help get you acquainted.
Much fuss was made when the Crenshaw Skate Club x Nike SB Dunk Low first leaked on the internet. When Ian of Private Selection shared his first looks at the shoe on his Instagram, the official Nike SB account commented on the post: “imagine getting the opportunity to create a dunk only to have an account named masterchefian leak it with no context to the story 🧑🍳🤡”
Now that the project has officially been unveiled, let’s dive into the “context to the story.” According to CSC, the colorway of the SB Dunk Low “builds on the DNA of the neighborhood’s most recognizable sign.” Though the Crenshaw Square sign has been renovated a few times over the years, the shoe references how the sign looked during Tobey’s childhood: white with red lettering and a green patina around the edges due to oxidation. This patina is reflected on the shoe’s upper, with a unique pattern rendered in the crackled leather overlays. Additionally, the embroidery on the heels is the same shape as the Crenshaw Square sign.
McIntosh incorporated a few other easter eggs from his neighborhood into the shoe’s design. ABC block illustrations inspired by a daycare near Tobey’s home are found on the inner tongue tag, as well as on the translucent outsoles. The Crenshaw zip code, 90008, is hidden on the underside of the insoles. Also hidden on the inner tongue tag is the quote “We are the ones you’ve been waiting for.” These words hold special meaning to McIntosh as he created the CSC community instead of waiting around for someone to make a community for him.
The Crenshaw Skate Club x Nike SB Dunk Low ($130) will release alongside two CSC x Nike SB tees ($45 each) on Saturday, August 5th on the CSC website and at select skate shops worldwide. There will be no SNKRS release (at least here in the US), so make sure to pay attention to the socials of your local skate shops as some have already announced raffle info for this drop.
