DTLR and adidas have teamed up to release a limited-edition “Chicago” Superstar designed to honor the Windy City’s culture and rich sports history.
Each color on the Chicago Superstar represents one of Chicago’s iconic sports teams, paying tribute to their championship legacies. The black leather upper and white sole represent the Southside Chicago White Sox, while blue heel accents nod to the rival Cubs from the Northside. The red heel tab honors the Chicago Bulls and their ’90s dynasty run, while the orange heel stripe takes us back to 1985, when Da Bears dominated the NFL. Last but not least, the green, yellow, red, and orange accents on the Three Stripes represent the feathers on the Chicago Blackhawks logo, paying homage to Chicago’s most recent sports dynasty, which won three Stanley Cups from 2009 to 2015.
Additional details on the DTLR x adidas Superstar include a custom Windy City logo on the right heel, a debossed Chicago flag on the lateral heel, and sky blue and red accents on the tongues, lace strips, and Superstar branding—all inspired by the city’s flag. Underfoot, the clear outsole reads “CHICAGO,” with the state of Illinois inside the “C,” the Chicago flag spanning the “H” and “I,” and the city skyline across the “CAGO.”
To give back to the city, adidas and DTLR will host SUPERSTAR DAY—a community-driven event where DTLR will repaint the gym walls of Randolph Elementary School, inspired by the same design elements found on the Chicago Superstar.
For the campaign, DTLR and adidas tapped Chicago historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas, who’s informative videos have taken social media by storm. Dilla will release a series of “Chicago Stories” clips on Instagram as part of the rollout, with the first episode featuring Jim’s Original and the Maxwell Street Polish, a Chicago food staple. (Note how he asks for a pop and not a soda!)
