Introduced earlier this year in a “Cactus Flower” colorway, the Nike SB version of the Air Max 95 is now returning with a new iteration in collaboration with veteran Nike SB rider Eric Koston.
This second colorway of the skate-ready AM95 comes in navy, white, and golden yellow, a color scheme Koston originally used on his first-ever signature shoe, the éS Eric Koston K1.
The materials on this pair vary drastically from the “Cactus Flower” colorway, featuring a nubuck toe cap and panels of nubuck, hairy suede, and mesh on the side panels. Additional details include mismatching “koston” and “airmax” branding on the tongues, custom graphic insoles, and Thai script (ไนกี้) on the lateral toe that translates to Nike as a nod to Koston’s Thai heritage. An accompanying apparel capsule rounds out the release, featuring button-up flannels, crewneck sweaters, loose denim skate pants, and “Just Do A Kickflip” tees.
Koston was instrumental in Nike SB’s decision to skate-ify the Air Max 95, it being one of his all-time favorite silhouettes. However, the model’s history in skateboarding is forever tied to Stevie Williams, who was famously photographed skating in a pair of “Neon” 95s at Philadelphia’s Love Park in 1997. During the rollout of the “Cactus Flower” colorway, Nike even referenced Stevie Williams with an ad that used his “Run, Skate, Chill” slogan. This rubbed Williams the wrong way, leading him to publicly calling out Nike and Koston and accusing them of being “culture vultures.” Luckily, this beef has since been squashed. Koston and Williams were spotted together at ComplexCon, where Koston gifted Stevie a pair of his Air Max 95s. Hopefully Nike does right by Stevie and includes him in a future SB 95 campaign—where his influence rightfully belongs.
