Dr. Martens and Fragment first teamed up in 2019, when Hiroshi Fujiwara introduced the Hollingborn, a custom silhouette built exclusively for their partnership. If that shoe was already a departure from Dr. Martens’ usual territory, this one goes further.
The Made in England Fragment Hollingborn Brogue takes the original 5-hole base and evolves it into a long-wingtip silhouette, the kind of shape that reads formal from a distance but carries enough edge up close to make sense in the context of both brands. The upper is entirely black high-shine patent leather, a choice that feels intentional in how much it subverts Dr. Martens’ usual grittiness. The brand built its legacy on subcultural defiance, workwear roots and that unmistakable yellow welt stitch. Here, Fujiwara replaces all of that with tonal black. The eyelets, the cord laces, the welt and the stitching, everything matches and disappears into itself.
In terms of details, the Fragment lightning bolt sits embossed on the back of the heel, and white text stamped along the lateral side spells out the collaboration’s full designation, a signature Fragment detail that reads more like a product code than branding. Flip the shoe over and the translucent gum outsole is the one moment of warmth in an otherwise all-black construction.
