It started with a pair of shorts. Back in 2018, READYMADE and SAINT Mxxxxxx designer Yuta Hosokawa created a custom pair for Takashi Murakami featuring his iconic flower character, a gesture that quietly laid the foundation for something much bigger.
The result is mononoke・made, the first original brand launched under Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki. This isn’t a collaboration in the traditional sense; it’s the natural output of years of ongoing dialogue, mutual trust, and a shared obsession with craft. Murakami gave Hosokawa full creative freedom to explore his archive, including works that had never been translated into apparel before. Hosokawa, for his part, approached each piece with the same obsessive attention to materials, construction, and finishing that defines his work at READYMADE, prototyping repeatedly until every detail landed exactly right.
The debut collection pulls from some of Murakami’s most beloved iconography. The statement piece is a cherry blossom varsity jacket: a pink wool body, cream leather sleeves with a flower emblem only visible up close, and an elaborate full-back scene of a sakura tree in full bloom. Alongside it, two washed crewneck sweatshirts feature graphic treatments: one with an “Azure Dragon” motif labeled Mononoke Haunting, the other with a “White Tiger” motif labeled Mononoke Spectral, both rendered in Murakami’s signature illustrative style on a faded charcoal background. Rounding out the lineup are a tonal black hoodie and sweatpants that may seem simple from far away, but the fabric has an all-over texture of Murakami’s flowers. Additionally, there’s also a cream MNNK logo tee with a small rainbow flower hit at the chest. The collection also includes accessories such as wallet chains, belts, and caps.
The first drop from mononoke・made will be available April 4th in-store at select retailers such as Nubian Tokyo, with online availability starting April 11th. Check out the lineup below.
