New Balance 1300JP Returns for 40th Anniversary

It’s 2025, which means it’s finally time for the return of New Balance’s iconic 1300JP.

Meticulously crafted in New Balance’s Skowhegan, Maine manufacturing facility, the Made in USA 1300 originally released in 1985 as the brand’s first luxury running shoe—produced with an unrivaled level of detail, expertise, and premium materials. The shoe gained a cult-like following in Japan when it first released, a testament to the country’s deep reverence for craftsmanship and American heritage style.

Given its popularity, the 1300 was re-released in 1995 exclusively in Japan for its 10-year anniversary as the New Balance 1300JP, built to meet the exact specifications of the original. Ever since then, New Balance has brought back the 1300JP every five years, always in limited quantities to preserve its cult status. The first few retros remained Japan-exclusive, until 2010, when the shoe was first made available globally. A Made in Japan edition, even more premium than the Made in USA release, also dropped in 2020.

“The 1300JP is a shoe like no other, an emblem of the soul of New Balance, that is prized by collectors and appreciators around the globe,” says Shinichi Kubota, Vice President of New Balance Japan. “Even before joining New Balance myself 34 years ago, I was inspired by my father’s work with the brand on the innovative sole design for the original 1300JP. This legacy model has been a constant throughout my career at New Balance, from spending years perfecting the first reissue, to working diligently on each subsequent launch to evolve the style in subtle ways while remaining true to its roots. With 2025’s launch we are excited to continue the 1300JP’s legacy, showcasing the design’s timeless appeal to loyal fans and a new generation.”

The 2025 iteration of the 1300JP retains the shoe’s premium nubuck and mesh construction and signature grey hues. The launch is part of New Balance’s annual Grey Days celebration honoring the brand’s iconic color. The month-long festivities kick off on May 1st and will be marked with product releases, events, and storytelling content throughout the month.

The New Balance 1300JP releases globally on May 29th via the New Balance website and select retailers. Check out the official images and manufacturing shots from New Balance’s Skowhegan facility below.
