For the DMV, New Balance 990s have served as a status symbol dating back to their steep price point in the ’80s, and have since become deeply tied to the region’s fashion scene and cultural identity. For Maryland, April is the month of blue crab season, and the Boston-based brand is delivering a two-pack of the New Balance 990v4 to celebrate.
Both 990v4 pairs arrive in a two-tone grey suede that honors NB’s signature grey color. The first colorway, “Cloud Blue,” features light blue mesh and a darker blue midsole, drawing inspiration from a blue crab freshly caught in the ocean, while the second pair, dubbed “Tangerine Heat,” gets its orange mesh and midsole from the stage where the crab is steamed and ready to be served. As the crab transforms from blue to orange, the two pairs mirror that process, telling a story rooted in Maryland’s crab culture and community ties.
