Nike is bringing back the Air Bakin in “Varsity Royal,” a colorway that originally released in 1997 and was last seen in 2008.
In addition to the iconic “Varsity Red” colorway, the “Varsity Royal” pair will also be making its return, staying true to the OG design while updating the ’90s basketball silhouette with improved shape and materials. The shoe features a wavy blue upper with slit paneling, a black mudguard overlay, and black rubber outsoles.
The history of the Air Bakin is tied to basketball players Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Kevin Garnett, who famously wore the shoe on-court in the late ’90s. It is also remembered for its controversial logo on the heel. Original pairs featured a flame-like motif that spells out “AIR,” though members of the Islamic community called out the logo for resembling the word “Allah” in Arabic script. Ever since, each Air Bakin retro has replaced this motif with the brand’s standard “Nike Air” logo, and this release will also follow protocol.
According to initial reports from Sneaker Files and zSneakerHeadz, the 2026 Nike Air Bakin “Varsity Royal” will released during the holiday season via SNKRS and select retailers. Stay tuned to Modern Notoriety for first looks and release updates.
