Nike is officially introducing the Air Liquid Max as this year’s new model for Air Max Day. The shoe marks the latest evolution in Air Max technology, built around a reimagined cushioning system and a design language pulled straight from one of nature’s most toxic creatures, the poison dart frog.
The shoe may look familiar to some, especially to Yeat fans. The American rapper already had the Air Liquid Max on-feet in his music video for “Made It On Our Own” alongside the upcoming British rapper EsDeeKid, back in February.
The Air Liquid Max is a completely new silhouette, drawing on four decades of Air Max DNA while deliberately breaking from everything that lineage looks like.
The cushioning is where it starts. Nike’s designers engineered what they’re calling point-loaded Air, a contoured unit that sits low and flexes fluidly underfoot, placed only in the zones where your foot actually needs it. The surrounding negative space isn’t empty; it’s intentional, shedding weight and giving the shoe its unmistakable geometry. If you’ve ever felt like you were almost walking on air, this is the closest Nike has gotten to making the literal.
The upper is just as considered. A low-profile mesh base is built up through a three-layer textured printing process that plays tricks on your eyes, looking smooth and unified from a distance, then revealing unexpected depth and tactility the closer you get. The design team drew from the poison dart frog, one of nature’s most visually arresting creatures, whose vibrant colors signal danger and whose distinctive toe pads shaped the shoe’s structural language. That reference hits hardest in the launch colorway. Rich greens dominate the upper, accented by a chrome Swoosh, a seamless, shiny finish, and a tinted, translucent outsole.
