There is exactly one McDonald’s in the world with turquoise arches. It sits in Sedona, Arizona, where the strict local ordinances deem that the golden arches clash too aggressively with the surrounding red rock landscape. It’s a minor piece of fast-food trivia that most people outside Arizona may not know, and it’s the detail that Devin Booker and Nike decided to build a shoe around.
Before he was a Phoenix Sun, before he was a five-time All-Star, before he was any of the things the basketball world knows him as now, Devin Booker was a McDonald’s All-American, showcasing his skills against the top high school players from across the country. The brand was a fixture in his come-up, and the McDonald’s x Nike Book 2 is an acknowledgment of that history.
“McDonald’s has been part of my story long before the league – from being a McDonald’s All-American alum to giving back through Ronald McDonald House, my roots with the brand run deep,” says Booker. “My sneakers have always been about honoring the places in Arizona that have shaped me over the years and the Nike Book 2 McDonald’s take inspiration from a place I return to every offseason.”
The general release colorway is equipped with a sandy beige base with turquoise accents pulled directly from those Sedona arches, the McDonald’s logo adorning the tongue and lateral heel. There’s also a friends-and-family version with the same turquoise hue running across the entire upper and midsole. The whole collab reads as a very specific love letter to a very specific place.
On the construction side, the Book 2 carries a Cushlon 3.0 midsole, a modernized molded upper, a forefoot Air Zoom unit, and a plush foam sock liner. It’s a low-profile basketball silhouette that works as well off the court as on it.
The packaging is worth noting. There’s a custom clamshell box shaped like a Big Mac container, rendered entirely in turquoise with a debossed golden arches lid. It’s the kind of detail that makes something a collector’s object, and it suggests that whoever was steering the creative decisions on this understood the assignment from the start.
McDonald’s is running a sweepstakes for the Friends & Family colorway through its app from May 22-28, open to anyone who downloads the app, opts in to MyMcDonald’s Rewards, and purchases one of six new specialty drinks to unlock a sweepstakes entry. Only 50 pairs will be available, making this a fairly low barrier for something that’s going to be genuinely hard to find.
McDonald’s and Nike have also teased a one-day pop-up for the general release colorway, giving fans an in-person opportunity to purchase a pair early. Pull up to the turquoise arches in Sedona on May 29th starting at 1pm for a chance to cop, while supplies last.
The general release colorway of the McDonald’s x Nike Book 2 “Sedona” will be available on June 2nd via Nike and select retailers such as Foot Locker. Check out both versions below.
