Nike is adding another chapter to its long history of Puerto Rico-inspired footwear with the upcoming Shox R4 “Puerto Rico,” arriving just ahead of New York City’s Puerto Rican Day Parade.
The Shox R4 is not just another retro model being thrown into a cultural colorway. For many Latino communities, especially across New York and other East Coast cities, Shox has always had a real presence. The silhouette embodies the bold, expressive energy of the early 2000s, making it a natural canvas for a release rooted in identity and pride.
The Nike Shox R4 “Puerto Rico” comes dressed in Glacier Blue, University Red, Metallic Silver, and White. The color palette pulls inspiration from the original Puerto Rican flag, which was created in 1895 by Puerto Rican exiles in New York City. That detail matters because this shoe is not only speaking to the island. It is also a tribute to the Puerto Rican diaspora, particularly the Boricua communities that have helped shape New York’s neighborhoods, music, style, food, and culture for generations.
Nike also adds a commemorative vejigante mask charm to the shoe, inspired by the masks worn during traditional Puerto Rican festivals. The vejigante is closely tied to cultural traditions in places like Loíza and Ponce, and it reflects the African, Taíno, and Spanish influences that continue to shape Puerto Rican identity. It’s a thoughtful addition that gives the release a deeper cultural connection beyond its flag-inspired color palette.
The campaign is centered around the phrase “Soy Boricua Que Se Sepa,” a proud statement that has long been connected to Puerto Rican identity. Nike also tapped Rauw Alejandro for the campaign, giving the release a contemporary cultural ambassador while keeping its message rooted in heritage. The timing is intentional. Puerto Rican Day Parade weekend is one of those moments when sneakers, flags, music, family, and cultural pride all come together in the same place.
