PaisaBoys is bringing its Mexican-American identity to one of Paul Rodriguez’s most recognizable silhouettes with an upcoming collaboration on the Nike SB P-Rod 1.
Founded in Los Angeles in 2016 by Mexican-American designers Joey Barba and Javier Bandera, PaisaBoys approaches the P-Rod 1 with a bold “What The” style design, with nearly every panel of the upper switching up in color, texture, and material.
The upper goes in just about every direction, mixing yellow snakeskin on the medial Swoosh, blue alligator on the toe box, and brown ostrich across the toe overlay. Darker brown ostrich continues onto the heel, while red alligator covers the medial quarter. Mismatched red and blue leather eyelets add another layer of contrast, finished with lime green heels that push the color palette even further.
Scorpion branding continues throughout the shoe, with scorpion logos appearing on belt buckle-inspired lace dubraes and glow-in-the-dark scorpions featured on the outsoles. Hidden on the inside of the tongue is the message “Every Paisa Is A Star,” PaisaBoys’ signature slogan inspired by the famous 1974 soul song “Every N****r Is A Star” by Boris Gardiner.
The use of alligator, snakeskin, and ostrich ties into the shoe’s Mexican-American inspiration. Known as the holy trinity of exotic leathers (pieles exóticas), the three materials have a long-standing connection to Mexican vaquero and charro culture and have became associated with craftsmanship, status, and regional identity.
As the first signature shoe of Mexican-American skater Paul Rodriguez, the P-Rod 1 provides a natural canvas for the collaboration, connecting Rodriguez’s and PaisaBoys’ shared heritage and Los Angeles roots.
