PF Flyers is teaming up with London-based label Story mfg. to rework the brand’s signature All-American silhouette, and the pitch is refreshingly subtle: let the fabric do the talking. That same hand-woven, naturally dyed process Story mfg. is known for gets applied here to a shoe that’s stayed nearly untouched for almost 90 years.
PF Flyers has been quietly making canvas sneakers since 1937, the kind of brand that never bothered chasing trends because the shoe already worked. Story mfg., on the other hand, is the younger sibling in this equation, a London label that’s spent the last thirteen years building a name around slow textiles: natural dyes, hand-looming, and small batches made with artisans in India and Thailand.
Two colorways lead the release. One arrives in a deep indigo upper with contrast off-white stitching, keeping things clean and monochrome from toe to collar, with the back of the shoe being the only place you spot a different shade of indigo. The other takes a more textured route, a checked indigo-and-brown weave finished off with a sepia-toned strip on the back. That brown isn’t dye at all; it’s naturally brown cotton grown that color in the field, then hand-loomed alongside indigo-dipped yarns by weavers working out of their own homes in Thailand. Because everything is done by hand, no two panels line up exactly the same.
Story mfg.’s fingerprints show up in the finer details too, including a hand-drawn apple patch stitched onto the ankle, wobbly lettering intact. Every pair ships in custom brown packaging with matching tissue and a cream dust bag, giving the whole rollout a handmade feel from the box up.
“We are proud to partner with Story mfg. as we continue the nearly 90-year heritage of P.F. Flyers developing considered canvas shoes,” says P.F. Flyers CEO Kassia Davis. “Story mfg. is a like-minded partner who isn’t chasing hype but is achieving thoughtful design with their hand-woven, naturally-dyed fabric.”
