Ahead of Pharrell’s new LEGO biopic PIECE BY PIECE hitting theaters on October 11th, the 13x-Grammy winner and Louis Vuitton creative director will be releasing his own collaborative LEGO set.
Titled “Over the Moon,” the 966-piece set draws inspiration from Pharrell’s fascination with space travel. It’s the same reason he and Chad Hugo named themselves The Neptunes, why they named their music label Star Trak, and why the Billionaire Boys Club logo is an astronaut.
This fascination with space started at a very young age and has all to do with growing up in Virginia Beach. “When I was a child, my perception of reality was based on a 20-mile radius,” says Pharrell. “And at the center of it was Atlantis Apartments. We lived in the crash zone of the Air Force Base, where the Blue Angels would fly all the time. So, my reference for looking up was always jets. And when you think beyond – what typically flies the highest, if you will, is space shuttles.”
“I was raised at a time when mankind was obsessed with the heavens, technology, and ultimately rocket systems,” Pharrell continues. “Growing up, the space shuttle was the thing that we saw as something which could take you beyond not only where you were, but, like, to the Moon.”
“Over the Moon” consists of three parts, each holding a special meaning for Pharrell. The black-and-gold shuttle symbolizes limitless potential, taking off and transporting you anywhere you can imagine. The bright and vibrant colors of the jet stream symbolize the imagination, creativity, and power of play to fuel your way. The third part is an abacus of “Phriends” that contains 49 different minifigure heads. This inclusion makes “Over the Moon” the LEGO product with the widest range of minifigure skin tones, with seven in total. The 49 “Phriends” plus the minifigures of Pharrell and his wife Helen Lasichanh make it 51 minifigure heads in total, over 30 of which that were designed specifically for this set.
“The abacus was a beautiful opportunity for the LEGO Group and me to help open the doors for all humans – not just one kind,” says Pharrell. “The minute that you put those bricks in your hand, and you decide to build with those pieces, you can make them into specifically anything you want. But you should feel welcome. So, the abacus created this really beautiful opportunity for us to make sure this [set] felt like a welcome mat.”
