Pokémon is celebrating its 30th anniversary with one of its biggest sneaker collaborations yet, teaming up with adidas Originals on over a dozen footwear styles inspired by some of the franchise’s most iconic characters.
Rather than centering the collection around a single silhouette, adidas spreads the celebration across several different models, with each Pokémon receiving its own distinct design language. The Charmander, Charmeleon, and Charizard evolutionary line all land on the Superstar, culminating in a premium Superstar Vintage for Charizard. Meanwhile, Pikachu gets three different takes, including a white Superstar covered in an all-over Pikachu print, a fuzzy yellow Superstar, and a matching Pro Model.
The Gen 1 Ghost-type family of Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar take over the Adistar Control 3, Adistar Control 5 and Adistar XLG 2.0, while Mewtwo arrives on the Handball Spezial, Samba, and ZX 8000. Rounding out the lineup is Rayquaza, featured on the Adistar Control 5, ZX 500, and the football-inspired F50 Tunit Mega (aka Megaride F50).
Every pair shares a few common details. Character artwork appears on the tongue tags, while each shoe comes equipped with a Poké Ball lace dubrae. The lone exception is the Mewtwo ZX 8000, which swaps in a Master Ball dubrae, a fitting tribute to the Legendary Pokémon’s status as the most difficult creature to catch in the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue games.
Some models also receive character-specific modifications. The Charizard Superstar Vintage features a wing-shaped flap across the eyelets, an eye-catching detail reminiscent of Jeremy Scott’s winged adidas designs. The Mewtwo Samba’s top three eyelets are arranged in a triangular pattern to represent the Pokémon’s distinct fingers, while the loop on the heel of the Mewtwo Handball Spezial represents the tubular neural cord on the back of Mewtwo’s neck. Charmeleon’s Superstar replaces the Three Stripes with 3D claws, while the fuzzy Pikachu Superstar and Pro Model use textured yellow uppers to mimic the Electric-type rodent’s signature fur.
The collection celebrates 30 years of Pokémon, which began with the release of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green for the Game Boy in Japan on February 27, 1996. Three decades later, the franchise continues to inspire collaborations that span gaming, fashion, and sneaker culture.
