Thirty years after Allen Iverson’s first signature shoe debuted, Reebok is giving the Question a rebuild. The Question Mid Recoded keeps Allen Iverson’s 1996 design as is and updates what’s underneath, with new cushioning, new traction, and a reshaped leather fit. It’s also the first Reebok release to carry the Recoded name. The Red Toe, the colorway most people picture when they think of the Question, leads the launch alongside a new 30th Anniversary Green.
The original was Iverson’s first signature shoe. Designed by Scott Hewett, it released in September 1996 during his rookie season, and it was on his feet when he crossed up Michael Jordan, still one of the most replayed moments of his career. The pearlized red toe and translucent outsole made it stand out from everything else on the court.
Reebok has treated the Question’s milestones as full-year events before. The 20th anniversary in 2016 brought 20 different versions, and this year’s celebration has already included a 3D-printed Question 96/26 made with Zellerfeld, while Houston rapper Tobe Nwigwe has also been tapped to put his own spin on the shoe.
“This shoe has always been about doing things your way and not asking for permission,” says Iverson. “The Question Mid Recoded keeps that same energy alive for the next generation.”
On the Recoded, the Red Toe sticks to the formula with a white leather upper, a red pearlized toe cap, red eyelets, white laces and a mesh panel beneath the lacing. Blue and red Reebok Vector logos sit on the tongue and side panel, red honeycomb windows are set into the midsole, and the translucent outsole is icy blue. The 30th Anniversary Green goes tonal. The grained leather, laces, mesh and outsole share one shade of green, with neon yellow-green logos, midsole windows and outsole lettering, and iridescent eyelets.
Underneath, the original traction pattern has been redeveloped for modern play, and a super critical foam pod handles cushioning. A midsole stability plate adds control, and the leather upper has been reshaped.
Reebok Basketball Designer Anthony Hale said the aim was to respect what made the Question a classic, which meant leaving the original silhouette alone and bringing Reebok’s newest technology and current thinking on basketball shoe feel and performance into a build made for today’s players.
The Question Mid Recoded launches in the US on November 10th at 10am ET via Reebok.com and Foot Locker, with a global rollout starting November 16th. The Red Toe was debuted by Team RBK.B athlete Tounde Yessoufou, and Reebok ties the 30th Anniversary Green to the traditional 30th anniversary color, which represents renewal.
Foot Locker and Reebok are also hosting a Philadelphia pop-up at the BOK Building, 1901 S 9th St, on November 10th from 2-7pm, featuring interactive moments, retail, and game-day activations honoring Iverson’s impact on basketball, style, and culture. Check out the two pairs below.
