The internet has been going crazy ever since Swatch and Audemars Piguet announced their upcoming “Royal Pop” collaboration. AI mock-ups, rumors, and speculation have taken over the timeline, with some people even camping outside their local Swatch store before the product was even unveiled. Now that the collab has been officially revealed, here’s everything you need to know.
The two Swiss brands are pushing against the conventions of traditional watchmaking, bringing together two completely different worlds: Audemars Piguet’s avant-garde luxury craftsmanship and Swatch’s accessible, playful approach to design. The Royal Pop combines the DNA of Audemars Piguet’s iconic Royal Oak with the modular pop-out spirit of Swatch’s POP watches from the 1980s, resulting in a colorful bioceramic pocket watch that feels intentionally unconventional.
It comes in eight colorways, nodding to the octagonal bezel of the Royal Oak, with each colorway named after a color and the number eight in eight different languages: French, English, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, German, and Romansh.
The official colorway names are:
- Otto Rosso (Red + Pink) – SSX03R100N
- Huit Blanc (White + Rainbow) – SSX03W100N
- Green Eight (Green + Light Green) – SSX03G100N
- Blaue Acht (Lime Green + Light Blue) – SSX03L101N
- Orenji Hachi (Navy Blue + Orange) – SSX03L103N
- Ocho Negro (Black + White) – SSX03W101N
- Lan Ba (Blue + Light Blue) – SSX03L100N
- Otg Roz (Pink + Yellow + Teal) -SSX03J100N
Of the eight colorways, six of them are Lépine-style, where the crown is at 12 o’clock, while two are Savonnette-style, featuring the crown at 3 o’clock and a petite seconde subdial. Of the Lépines, the Huit Blanc stands out for its rainbow-colored hour markers and bezel screws, the latter of which are placed randomly, allowing for millions of different combinations, essentially making each Huit Blanc unique.
The Lan Ba and Otg Roz are the two Savonnette styles, the latter coming in a pink, yellow, and teal color scheme inspired by the father of pop art, Andy Warhol, and his iconic 1964 silkscreen painting of Marilyn Monroe.
On the reverse side, the caseback of each watch showcases a brand-new version of Swatch’s signature SISTEM51 movement, reimagined as a hand-wound caliber and finished with bold Pop Art-inspired detailing.
Each watch comes with a calfskin lanyard and a bioceramic attachment that the watch case clips into, meant to inspire wearers to “break” free from the wrist, allowing them to style the watch in various ways: clipped to a handbag, worn on the wrist, around the neck, or attached to a belt loop. Three different lanyard lengths are available, and there’s also a removable stand that lets the watch function as a desk clock. With these options, the two brands hope to encourage wearers to rethink the traditional wristwatch.
