Original Story (09/16/22): Marcus Jordan, son of Michael Jordan and founder of Trophy Room, will soon be releasing a new Jumpman collaboration: the Trophy Room x Air Jordan 7.
The OG Air Jordan 7 released in 1992, which is the year when the Dream Team was formed. MJ, Bird, Johnson, and company would go to dominate the competition at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Defeating its opponents by an average of 44 points, the Dream Team won the gold medal for the United States. MJ rocked the “Olympic” Jordan 7s during this time.
The Trophy Room x Air Jordan 7 pays homage to the Barcelona Olympics, though goes into more detail with its storytelling. Its color palette is similar to the OG “Olympic” 7s, with red suede for the base of the upper, tan suede overlays, hits of navy on the tongue and laces, and metallic gold accents. The heel tabs feature the colors of the five Olympic rings, while the heels themselves feature Trophy Room branding and MJ’s Olympic jersey number 9. Similarly to the infamous Trophy Room x Air Jordan 1s, these feature Michael Jordan’s signature on the lateral heel.
The storytelling gets deep when you look inside of the shoe and at the packaging, where we see references to the date June 22, 1992 and Monte Carlo, Monaco, as well as the phrase “New sheriff in town.” This nods to a Dream Team practice scrimmage, a 5-on-5 game with Michael Jordan as the captain of one team and Magic Johnson the captain of the other. “[It was the] greatest game I’ve ever played in,” said Michael Jordan years later regarding the scrimmage.
“The Greatest Game Nobody Ever Saw” as it is now known was highly competitive, and while Magic’s team took a quick lead, Jordan’s team ended up victorious with a final score of 40-36. “There’s a new sheriff in town,” MJ smugly said to Magic after the game.
