TUNE has been on a serious run lately. Hot off its inaugural adidas collaboration earlier this year with its Adizero Evo SL, the Seoul-based boutique is now turning its attention to Nike. The silhouette for the collab is the Air Force 1, built entirely in canvas and loaded with a concept that’s equal parts nostalgia and discovery.
Dubbed “Wardrobe Unlocked,” the TUNE x Nike Air Force 1 draws from the presence of the Air Force 1 CVS (Canvas) on Seoul’s streets back in the ’90s, a defining moment in the city’s sneaker culture. The idea behind the name is exactly what it sounds like: unexpectedly stumbling onto something rare, like striking gold at a thrift store after looking for hours on the racks or looking through your dad’s closet and finding a hidden gem from his early years.
The result reads dark and utilitarian, with the entire shoe dressed in a deep olive tone and constructed from heavy, wax-coated canvas designed to age over time. TUNE’s Instagram revealed a reel showing that the card included with the shoe isn’t just for show; the sandpaper-textured sheet is meant to be used across the upper to give the shoe a worn, distressed feel. The material will also mold to the wearer, meaning each pair will gradually become one-of-a-kind based on how it’s worn. It’s the type of shoe that’ll look better after a couple of months in rotation than it does fresh out of the box.
For the generation that remembers the original AF1 CVS wave hitting Korea, this one’s a callback. For everyone else, it’s a proper introduction to why that moment mattered in the first place.
