UNION Los Angeles and Nike are revisiting the Dunk’s place in sneaker culture with their latest collaboration, the “Natural Selection” collection. The capsule looks beyond the silhouette’s basketball origins, drawing on the decades of skateboarding, music, and streetwear that helped shape its identity.
The collection’s name reflects the idea that personal taste evolves over time, while certain pieces remain staples because they stand the test of time. Taking inspiration from Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection, UNION applies that same thinking to footwear and everyday clothing, focusing on familiar silhouettes, considered materials, and muted colors rather than dramatic reinvention.
At the center of the collaboration is a reworked Nike Dunk Low featuring unstructured, unlined suede construction and a tonal finish. The heel has also been redesigned to fold down, allowing the shoe to transition into a slip-on silhouette. Three understated colorways—”Eclipse” (Black), “Fatigue” (Cargo Olive), and “Hide” (Brown)—give the classic model a more subdued look while retaining its recognizable shape. While the “Eclipse” and “Fatigue” keep things simple with monochromatic suede uppers, the “Hide” introduces a subtle twist, featuring a muted leopard print etched into the suede.
The footwear is joined by an apparel capsule built around the idea of what someone would naturally wear with the sneakers. The lineup includes a hoodie, sweatpants, a t-shirt, and a reworked M-65 jacket, bringing everyday wardrobe essentials into the collection. Heavyweight fabrics, contemporary proportions, and subtle branding carry the same restrained approach seen on the Dunk, while the military-inspired jacket looks to 1990s styling for its reference point.
