Melbourne-based retailer Up There and ASICS are back with their fourth collaboration, the GEL-KAYANO 12.1 “Natsukashii.”
“Natsukashii” is a Japanese term that describes the warm feeling of fondness when recalling moments from the past—a mix of nostalgia and familiarity. This theme comes to life through the GEL-KAYANO 12.1, which incorporates mesh borrowed from the GEL-KAYANO 20, lining from the GEL-Kinsei 4, a reworked forefoot flex zone from the GEL-KAYANO 12, and GEL-NIMBUS 17 tooling. The pair arrives in grey and deep green tones with glossy overlays and reflective accents. Details include a branded heel tab, co-branded sockliner, and two lace options in grey and white.
Up There’s past collaborations with ASICS, such as the botanical-themed GT-II and the “Kookaburra” GEL-LYTE III, explored a “sense of place” through the flora and fauna of their homelands. This latest project shifts focus to a “sense of time”—celebrating memory, nostalgia, and the rhythm of the past.
