Maybe you thought your high school experience would mirror that of the iconic 1980s flick Fast Times at Ridgemont High. In any case, there must’ve been someone that mimicked cool-guy character Jeff Spicoli – your typical surfer-looking, weed-smoking, too cool for school white dude. In a way, if you’ve ever owned a pair of checkered slip-on Vans, you’re already more like him than you thought.
In one particular scene, Spicoli, played by Sean Penn, is on the phone with one of his friends, takes a bong hit and unboxes a fresh pair of Vans checkered slip-ons. Flashing back to the 1982 release of the movie, brand head Steve Van Doren had a few pairs made to give away at the premiere – a rare style that never saw a retail release.
The silhouette launched into popularity following the movie and finally, the classic shoe is being re-released in honor of the 80s film, complete with red Fast Times branding on the midsole. Sculpted using the original 1982 construction, the show features a deluxe 10oz heavyweight checkerboard canvas upper and UltraCush footbed cushioning.
While there’s no official release date or price available yet, The Vans Anaheim Factory Slip-On Fast Times at Ridgemont High will release via Vans webstore sometime this March.
