adidas is teaming up with waf. (Wafflesncream) for the first time, marking the brand’s first partnership with a Nigerian label and making waf. the first African skate community to collaborate on the Superstar in the silhouette’s more than 50-year history.
waf.’s backstory does a lot of the explaining here. Brothers Jomi and Nifemi Marcus-Bello, along with KC Obijiaku, started the group in 2012 because Lagos simply didn’t have a skate scene to plug into, so they decided to build one themselves, eventually opening a public skatepark on the grounds of a former colonial prison at Freedom Park. Fourteen years and nine editions of their own Go Skate Day later, waf. is generally regarded as West Africa’s first real skate institution.
The design pulls directly from the city itself. The dusty grey is meant to read as Lagos Island’s industrial backdrop, while the soft pink is a nod to the way the sky over the coast turns that color at certain hours.
“There’s a phrase we hold on to: treat your context as an archive. Lagos has always been ours. When the Superstar came to us, a shoe with more than fifty years of history, the question was never how to decorate it. It was what this city would ask of it,” says waf. co-founder Jomi Marcus-Bello. “The sides breathe because our heat demands it. The grey is the Island as it actually is. The pink is our sky. Skateboarding gave us our community, and that community gave this design its language. This shoe is where the two finally meet.”
Underneath the color story, it’s still a skate shoe built to be ridden. Breathable side panels help move air through the shoe in Lagos’ heat and humidity, while the Superstar ADV’s skate-specific construction is designed for board feel, grip, and durability.
adidas has supported waf.’s community initiatives for years, including multiple editions of Go Skate Day, so the Superstar ADV reads less like a one-off collaboration and more like the next chapter in an existing relationship. As adidas’ Estee Erasmus puts it, waf. has “been at the forefront of skateboarding and culture in Lagos without waiting for anyone’s permission.”
Following its early release at adidas Lekki in Lagos, the waf. x adidas Superstar ADV will be available globally starting October 12th on adidas.com and at select retailers. Check out the pair below.
