Wales Bonner x adidas SS24 “Rift Valley Runners” Collection

Wales Bonner and adidas Originals reunite this Spring/Summer 2024 season for a new collection inspired by East African running culture.

The new offering, titled “Rift Valley Runners,” is named after the region near Iten, Kenya, that has been the epicenter of long-distance running since Kenya’s rise to prominence on the world stage in the 1960s.

This SS24 collection from Bonner and the Three Stripes pays homage to the resilience, endurance, and dedication of championship runners that call Iten home. Archival running looks have been recontextualized through a contemporary lens and feature elevated materials, bright colors, and bold patterns.

The accompanying footwear offering is comprised of three silhouettes, including the SL 76, a vintage mesh and suede running model from the ’70s. It’s offered in two colorways: yellow with black stripes and light blue with black stripes.

While running is the main inspiration for the collection, there is still some football DNA carried over from last season’s collection. The Wales Bonner Samba makes its return in two new colorways, this time with short tongues instead of the long folded-over tongues from the FW23 Sambas.

The most interesting of the three model options offered is the Samba Millennium, a silhouette from 2009 that Adsum helped reintroduce late last year. While the OG Samba has shined as a retro-inspired lifestyle silo, the Samba Millennium has always been seen as an indoor sports shoe. Wales Bonner and adidas are aiming to change that mindset with a lux approach to the model, adorning it with supple nappa leathers, satin lining, moccasin stitched details, and a wavy embroidered pattern on the toe. Two distinct colorways of the Samba Millennium are offered: one with an elephant skin-textured leather heel and one with a blue pony hair heel.

The campaign ties it all back to theme of East African runners. Shot in Iten, the imagery features a cast of world class adidas runners: Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Bethwel Yegon, Nelly Chepchirchir, Charles Simotwo, Cornelius Kemboi, and Barselius Kipyego.
