After kicking off his partnership with Saucony last year, Westside Gunn is back with an even louder follow-up. The Griselda founder has officially unveiled the GXFR x Saucony Grid Jazz 9 “Awesome Gods,” a maximalist take on the retro runner that pushes far beyond the already-bold ProGrid Triumph 4 “Super FlyGods” released in late 2025.

According to Gunn, the inspiration came directly from two of sneaker culture’s most memorable collaborators: Tokyo’s atmos and designer Jeremy Scott, both known for turning classic silhouettes into statement pieces through unapologetic use of animal prints, faux fur, and unconventional materials. Gunn channels that same fearless energy here, layering the Grid Jazz 9 with a mix of exotic textures that make every angle feel different.

The upper is built around a jungle-inspired combination of faux fur and bold animal prints, finished with leather moccasin-style laces and a full leather lining. Gunn says every pair features a unique arrangement of materials, meaning no two sneakers are exactly alike.

The details continue throughout the shoe. Embroidered scorpions land on the heels, while the insoles feature a debossed scorpion graphic on one foot and Griselda branding on the other. Hanging from the shoe is perhaps the collection’s wildest touch: a real scorpion encapsulated inside a clear circular hang tag.

Even the packaging gets special treatment. The box lid is framed with an ornate border reminiscent of the gilded frames Westside Gunn frequently incorporates into his visual world, whether on album covers or throughout his artwork. It’s a fitting nod to the rapper’s long-running approach of placing street culture alongside classical and contemporary fine art, reinforcing the idea that the sneaker is meant to be viewed as a collectible as much as something to wear.

“This is one of the best sneakers ever,” Gunn wrote while unveiling the collaboration on Instagram. He described the pair as a “designer sneaker” worthy of luxury retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue or Neiman Marcus, while emphasizing the premium construction and comfort.

The GXFR x Saucony Grid Jazz 9 “Awesome Gods” is slated to release on August 28th, coinciding with Westside Gunn Day, the official municipal holiday in Buffalo, New York, originally proclaimed by former mayor Byron Brown in recognition of the rapper’s cultural impact and contributions to his hometown. Additional release details are expected soon. Stay tuned to Modern Notoriety for updates.
