The Whitaker Group Opens New Social Status Location in Detroit

The Whitaker Group has shared a first look at Social Status Detroit—a vibrant space that brings together culture, fashion, hospitality, and art in one of the Motor City’s most storied neighborhoods.

Located on the city’s east side, the $5.5 million development reimagines a 100-year-old, 1,750-square-foot commercial building into a multi-use community hub. The space includes a retail area for sneakers and apparel, a full beSocial community hub upstairs, a take-out restaurant, and a central courtyard complete with an outdoor basketball half-court featuring murals by Nina Chanel Abney.

Social Status Detroit is part of The Whitaker Group’s ongoing $51M+ commitment to reinvesting in historically Black neighborhoods, with a footprint in cities like Harlem, Charlotte, and Atlanta. The opening follows several landmark TWG initiatives, including A Ma Maniére Beach—the brand’s first resort experience in Folly Beach, South Carolina—and The Collective on Tuckaseegee in Charlotte, a community-driven compound featuring ten distinct retail spaces and the first Black-owned, publicly accessible skatepark in the country.

“Detroit has always been a city of creativity, culture, and strength-it deserves spaces that reflect that energy and pour back into the community,” says James Whitner, founder of The Whitaker Group. “With Social Status Detroit, we’re not just opening a store-we’re creating a platform for connection, expression, and opportunity in a neighborhood that’s been undervalued for far too long. This is about honoring the past while building for the future.”

Social Status Detroit’s grand opening will take place on April 24th at 7pm, located at 9101 E Jefferson Ave, Unit A, Detroit, MI 48214. Check out the new space below.
