Willy Chavarria is finally getting the recognition he deserves. After being named American Menswear Designer of the Year at the 2024 CFDA Awards, the Chicano designer has now made his highly-anticipated Paris Fashion Week debut with his AW25 “TARANTULA” showcase.
From the setting, to the looks, to the model casting, “TARANTULA” was a celebration of diversity, perseverance, but most importantly, love. As Chavarria’s eponymous fashion label celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, the show paid homage to the brand’s decade-long history, highlighting signature recurring themes such as Mexican-American culture, subversive takes on masculinity, and the toughness of New York.
The show was held at the American Church in Paris, a fitting venue as the inter-denominational church welcomes everyone — regardless of race, religion, or sexual orientation — similar to how Chavarria’s work is designed for all.
Alters covered in roses and candles served as the backdrop as the star-studded lineup of models made their way down the church aisle. Jerry Lorenzo made his runway debut as a model. Latino gang was well represented, thanks to appearances by Becky G, Tokischa, Indya Moore, Paloma Elsesser, Ozuna, Danny Ramirez, and more. There was even a performance by J Balvin midway through the show.
Following J Balvin’s performance, the second half of the show began, featuring Chavarria’s second collaborative collection with adidas Originals. The AW25 lifestyle collection includes ready-to-wear pieces for both men and women, as well as footwear. The collection conveys a message of ‘Warriors for Social Justice,’ taking a strong stance in the fight for equality. Combat boot-inspired sneakers, oversized leather bombers and silhouettes pay homage to the ’90s hip-hop era.
Leading up to show, Willy Chavarria and adidas took over the streets of Paris, cruising in a lowrider Chevy Impala and stopping at various locations to hand out exclusive pieces from their collab merch capsule. These “Paris” pieces were also made available on the Willy Chavarria website as well as at the adidas Originals Paris flagship store.
The “Paris” merch includes hoodies as well as short and long-sleeve tees, each offered in navy with white stripes, adorned with rose motifs and Paris branding. The collection also includes a pair of grey sweatpants, a navy cap, and two versions of the adidas Jabbar, the basketball shoe created in 1978 for NBA icon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
The Chavarria Jabbar Low, puts a subtle spin on the OG white/black colorway, equipped with an asymmetric fold-over tongue that boasts a Chavarria woven label. Meanwhile, the Chavarria Jabbar Dress revamps the model with a dress shoe-inspired design that combines black leather, animal print pony hair, a pointed toe, and metallic gold accents.
