After just announcing a creative partnership with John Galliano earlier this week, Zara has revealed its next major collaboration. Willy Chavarría, a two-time consecutive CFDA American Menswear Designer of the Year, is linking up with a fast fashion company for the first time, releasing a collection titled Vatísimo.
The name says everything. It’s an elevated riff on “vato,” a word similar to “bro,” and speaks to brotherhood and cultural rootedness. The 150-piece collection draws on Chavarría’s Mexican heritage, shaped by family, drama, and the over-the-top glamour of telenovelas that were a fixture of his childhood. The result is something simultaneously earnest and heightened, deeply specific to who he is. It covers both men’s and women’s wear, as well as jewelry and accessories, including leather weekend bags.
The clothes land exactly where you’d expect them to and have a dark palette with black and red dominating. For womenswear, we see the juxtaposition of a flowy yet boxy silk blouses with an attached scarf tied into a bow, a mid-rise leather skirt, graphic tees, dresses, and, what catches the eye most, the glossy, cropped leather jacket with, of course, bold shoulders. Menswear has a bit more variety, including ties, sweat sets, polos, five-inch-inseam fleece shirts, button-ups, and even a jumpsuit, all stamped with the Chavarria name or a rose somewhere.
The campaign was shot on location in Mexico by both Chavarría himself and Glen Luchford and features model Christy Turlington and actor Alberto Guerra.
Chavarría’s mainline work has always been limited in production and priced accordingly; Vatísimo opens that up. The Willy Chavarría x Zara Vatísimo Collection is slated to release on March 26th through the Zara website (12am ET) and in stores. Check out the preview below.
