Barbie is heading into the future with a little help from Yoon Ahn. The designer behind Tokyo-based label AMBUSH has teamed up with Mattel to reimagine the iconic doll as Prototype 001, a futuristic take on Barbie that trades traditional fashion for sculpted armor, anime-inspired details, and a distinctly technological look.
For those unfamiliar with Ahn, she is the co-founder and creative force behind AMBUSH, the Tokyo-born label she launched with VERBAL in 2008. The brand began as an experimental jewelry line before expanding into unisex ready-to-wear, building a design language around pop-art references, unexpected proportions, and Tokyo’s street culture. Over the years, AMBUSH has collaborated with names including Nike, Louis Vuitton, sacai, Converse, and Gentle Monster, while Ahn has also worked as the jewelry designer for Dior Men.
That background comes through in Prototype 001, which moves away from the expected fashion-doll formula. Ahn’s Barbie wears a sleek white suit with black detailing and pink accents, complete with a matching headset and long blonde hair styled with a sharp hime-inspired fringe. The new face sculpt gives her an especially stylized appearance, while the armored silhouette makes the doll look more like a humanoid from a futuristic universe than a traditional Barbie.
Ahn’s vision extends beyond Barbie herself. Prototype 001 comes with a matching robot cat, designed in the same white, black, and pink palette. The articulated companion helps complete the futuristic world built around the doll, giving Barbie her own miniature sidekick for whatever comes next.
The collaboration pulls from the designer’s longstanding interest in the intersection of fashion, technology, and pop culture. Rather than translating the AMBUSH aesthetic directly into a tiny wardrobe, Ahn approaches Barbie as a character from a possible future, drawing on the visual language of anime and science fiction while keeping the design sleek and minimal.
The packaging follows the same world-building approach. A soft pink box is marked “Prototype 001,” “/ YOON,” and “Tokyo / JP,” giving the collectible the feel of an artifact from an imagined design archive. Inside, the doll features a newly sculpted body with 13 points of articulation, while the robot cat has six points of articulation. A certificate of authenticity is also included.
The YOON x Barbie doll will be available through Mattel Creations beginning September 4th at 12pm ET, marking Ahn’s first Barbie collaboration and another addition to her growing design universe. Check out the doll and her sidekick below.
