ASICS introduces a sequel to its popular GEL-NYC silhouette as part of a new Signature Series program with HSDT.
Originally launched in 2023, the GEL-NYC is a staple silhouette in ASICS Sportstyle’s lineup of 2000s-inspired mesh runner styles. After introducing the revamped GEL-NYC 2055 in 2024, the model now gets a proper sequel, the GEL-NYC 2.0. The silhouette was designed in partnership with HSDT (HAL STUDIOS DESIGN THINKING), the interdisciplinary design arm of Australia’s HAL STUDIOS founded by John Bouquet.
The project is centered around the idea of “The Architecture of Everyday Life,” drawing from the often overlooked industrial elements, surfaces, and structures that form the framework of New York City: steel beams, scaffolding, concrete sidewalks, fire escapes, oxidised metals, etc. The GEL-NYC 2.0 SSHS translates these references into a shoe built for the motion of everyday life.
The GEL-NYC 2.0 makes its debut in two colorways, each inspired by ’90s NYC hip-hop albums that Bouquet grew up on. A yellow pair, dubbed the “Shaolin ’93,” pays tribute to the legendary Wu-Tang Clan and their debut studio album 36 Chambers. Meanwhile, the brown colorway, called “Queens ’94,” is an ode to Illmatic, the debut studio album by Nas.
The rollout for the GEL-NYC 2.0 SSHS is highlighted by a campaign starring Nas, Wu-Tang’s own Raekwon, and a wider cast of native New Yorkers that embody the city’s creative scene. This includes rapper A$AP Twelvyy, James Harris and Lawrence Schlossman of the Throwing Fits podcast, industrial designer and creator of the NYChair Malcolm Ransome, Lichen founders Jared Blake and Edward Be, and Shane Davis of Public Records.
The HSDT x ASICS GEL-NYC 2.0 SSHS launches globally on January 16th via ASICS.com (11am ET), hsdt.net, and select retailers. Check out both colorways below.
