With locations in Louisiana and Texas, retailer Sneaker Politics is dropping a special collaboration with ASICS to coincide with this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW), the annual music, film, and tech festival in Austin.
The Politics GEL-KAYANO 14 draws inspiration from ’80s propaganda, specifically the “Just Say No” anti-drug campaign spearheaded by Nancy Reagan during her husband’s presidency. For this release, Politics flips the “War on Drugs” campaign into a “War on Sneakers” campaign, a reminder to sneakerheads that they are in charge of their own sneaker collections and to stand strong against the peer pressure of hype-driven trends.
The design of the Politics GEL-KAYANO 14 builds on the standard white mesh upper with synthetic metallic silver overlays, adding pops of fiery red and gold throughout as a possible nod to the flames of a lighter. The red hemp tweed pattern printed on the insoles adds another subtle reefer connection.
The Sneaker Politics x ASICS GEL-KAYANO 14 drops March 8th at 11am FCFS at all Sneaker Politics locations in Louisiana and Texas. A launch party will take place at the Austin location for SXSW, featuring live music and complimentary drinks.
There is also an online raffle, with entries accepted now through March 9th at 9am CT. Remaining pairs will be available online March 10th at 9am CT on the Sneaker Politics website. Check out the campaign images below.
